German Chocolate Cake - Take II

Take II

This past week, I started a new summer series: “Operation Take 2”.

My family and I got away for a few days and while it was nice to have a break from the kitchen, it felt even better to be back. I came home relatively refreshed and inspired after stepping away from my mixer for a quick 72 hours.

During that time, I decided to begin remaking - and rephotographing - all of the cakes that I made when I was just starting out. My website, social media, and customer base have grown substantially - all thanks to you guys - and my old photos needed some dressing up.

The Cake That Started It All

I had an order for my Cookies and Cream cake which was only the second cake I ever photographed over a year ago (see the original photos below). It was simple and I loved knowing what the next step was instead of figuring it out as I went - the opposite of recipe development.

It wasn’t in my schedule to get any good photos of the updated cake, but it sparked the idea!

On To The German Chocolate Cake

First up in the series was the Hot Fudge Sundae cake featured here. Next, I chose to do my German Chocolate Cake since my grandfather was in town and German Chocolate is his favorite!

My German Chocolate Cake is a rich, dark chocolate cake that doesn’t include the original “filling” at all, and instead features a pecan cookie crunch and a baked coconut custard. It’s topped off with my signature chocolate buttercream made from melted dark chocolate.

My grandfather gave it two thumbs up, so I’m taking that as a definite win!

I’m looking forward to continuing remaking and documenting my “OG” cakes - I hope you’ll join me for the journey but most of all, I hope it encourages you to take a look at how far you’ve come in your own personal journeys as well!

Enjoy!
