New Year’s Cake

I took a few days off from baking to enjoy Christmas with Thomas and P, but who said anything about taking a break from decorating?

This cake was inspired by a movie I watched recently - which you can probably guess just by looking at it.

The Great Gatsby! Such a wonderful movie (both old and new versions) and the style of the 20s and Gatsby era is EVERYTHING!

Black and gold were already set in stone for my New Years inspiration, but I saw the embellishments on the dresses in the movie and knew that was what I wanted on my cake - talk about elaborate!

Each of these sequins were hand placed with a pair food grade tweezers. I’ve never been too good at math but if I had to guess, there’s probably about 200 gold sequins on this cake - all edible of course.

The buttercream is made with black cocoa powder and very little black food gel. It tastes just like an Oreo cookie! Big fan.

I could’ve spent days decorating this cake - it truly was that much fun, from start to finish.

I topped the cake with some gold accents including gold sugar pearls,  and threw in a few sparkler candles at the end of the shoot as well. It’s almost 2022, why not?!

I wish you all the best in 2022!

Enjoy!
